Juniper MPC7E-10G-RTU

The Juniper MPC7E-10G-RTU is a fixed-configuration Modular Port Concentrator (MPC) for Juniper MX Series routers. Specifically, it carries forty 10GbE SFP+ ports, and its Right-to-Use (RTU) licensing enables 20 of them. As a result, operators get dense 10G connectivity at a lower entry cost and can unlock more ports later.

Ports and RTU Licensing

In addition, each of the 40 SFP+ ports supports 10 Gbps or 1 Gbps speeds. The card ships with 20 ports enabled; however, operators can activate the remaining ports with an additional Juniper license. Consequently, the card grows with demand instead of requiring a hardware swap.

Routing, MPLS, and Security Features

Furthermore, the card delivers full-scale Layer 2 and Layer 2.5 features with reduced-scale Layer 3. It supports up to 2 million FIB routes, 6 million RIB routes, and up to 32 L3VPN instances per card. Moreover, MACsec encryption works at both 10 Gbps and 1 Gbps, and Junos Trio chipsets deliver up to 400 Gbps per card.

MPC7E-10G-RTU Compatibility and Requirements

The MPC7E-10G-RTU works in the MX240, MX480, MX960, MX2008, MX2010, and MX2020 routers. However, MX240, MX480, and MX960 chassis need high-capacity power and cooling, SCBE2 or SCBE3 control boards, and enhanced-IP or enhanced-Ethernet network-services mode. Likewise, MX2000 routers need an adapter card. For full details, see Juniper’s MPC7E-10G hardware reference.

Where This Card Fits

For these reasons, the card suits service provider aggregation, Carrier Ethernet and MPLS edge networks, and MX upgrades that start with moderate 10G demand. For Cisco networks, the Cisco A9K-MOD200-TR ASR 9000 line card fills a similar aggregation role.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Juniper MPC7E-10G-RTU?

In short, it’s a Juniper MX Series line card with 40x 10GbE SFP+ ports, 20 of them licensed for use under Right-to-Use licensing.

How does the RTU version differ from the standard MPC7E-10G?

Both use the same 40-port hardware. However, the RTU version enables 20 ports, while the standard MPC7E-10G enables all 40.

Can I enable more ports on this card?

Yes. Specifically, an additional Juniper license unlocks the remaining ports without changing hardware.
