Cyan 800-0036-01 WSS-402

The Cyan 800-0036-01 WSS-402 (HECI/CLEI: WOCUAS5VAA) is a Wavelength Selective Switch (WSS) module for the Cyan Z-Series Packet-Optical Platforms, including the Z33 and Z77. Since Ciena acquired Cyan, Ciena now supports the Z-Series as part of its portfolio. Specifically, the WSS-402 provides 40-wavelength cross-connect for 2-degree (East/West) ROADM configurations. As a result, operators can add, drop, or pass through individual DWDM channels at each node.

Integrated Amplification and Channel Monitoring

In addition, the WSS-402 builds amplification, variable optical attenuation (VOA), and optical channel monitoring into its receive and transmit paths. Consequently, operators get switching, power balancing, and channel visibility from one card instead of several. Moreover, this design saves slots and simplifies node turn-up.

How the WSS-402 Builds a ROADM Node

Typically, operators install one WSS-402 per direction, so a 2-degree node uses two modules: one facing East and one facing West. Then, each module pairs with a passive AWG-40 optical patch for local add/drop. Furthermore, operators can activate additional channels through Right-to-Use (RTU) licensing, including a channels 17–40 add-on RTU.

WSS-402 vs. Newer Z-Series WSS Modules

The WSS-402 is the original 40-channel Z-Series WSS. By comparison, the newer F-series modules support up to 96 channels: the WSS-F4 (800-0139-01) for 4-degree nodes and the WSS-F8 (800-0140-01) for 8-degree nodes. For this reason, the WSS-402 is the right choice for networks already built on 40-channel plans, as well as spares for deployed Z-Series fleets.

Key Features

  • First, it provides 40-wavelength DWDM cross-connect.
  • Second, it supports 2-degree (East/West) ROADM configurations.
  • Additionally, it integrates amplification, VOA, and channel monitoring.
  • Furthermore, it pairs with the passive AWG-40 add/drop patch.
  • Moreover, it scales channel capacity through RTU licensing.
  • Finally, it works with Cyan/Ciena Z33 and Z77 platforms.

Why Lease from Telecom Leasing?

  • First, you keep Z-Series networks running without a large capital outlay.
  • Second, every unit is tested and ready to deploy.
  • In addition, flexible terms cover spares, node expansion, and project builds.
  • Finally, you get fast quotes and quick shipping.

Best of all, Telecom Leasing offers the WSS-402 for lease or purchase, so you can source discontinued Z-Series hardware with confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Cyan 800-0036-01?

In short, it’s the WSS-402, a 40-channel Wavelength Selective Switch module for 2-degree ROADM nodes on the Cyan/Ciena Z33 and Z77.

How many WSS-402 modules does a 2-degree node need?

Essentially, a 2-degree node needs two WSS-402 modules, because each module serves one direction (East or West).

What’s the difference between the WSS-402 and WSS-404?

The WSS-402 supports 2-degree (East/West) nodes. In contrast, the WSS-404 supports 4-degree (North/South/East/West) nodes for mesh networks.
