The Cyan 800-0140-01 WSS-F8 is a Wavelength Selective Switch (WSS) module for the Cyan Z-Series Packet-Optical Platforms, including the Z33 and Z77. Since Ciena acquired Cyan, Ciena now supports the Z-Series as part of its portfolio. Specifically, the WSS-F8 gives operators per-wavelength control over which DWDM channels they add, drop, or pass through at a node. As a result, it serves as the foundation of a flexible, high-degree ROADM architecture.
In addition, the WSS-F8 supports up to eight fiber directions from a single site. Consequently, carriers can build larger mesh and multi-ring nodes than the WSS-F2 or WSS-F4 allow. Moreover, operators can route wavelengths remotely, without truck rolls or manual patching.
Furthermore, operators activate channel capacity through Right-to-Use (RTU) licenses. The base kit enables channels 1–8, and then a Z-Series F-series add-on RTU unlocks channels 9–96. Therefore, networks can start small and scale as traffic grows, without replacing hardware.
The WSS-F8 is the highest-degree module in the Z-Series F-series family. By comparison, the WSS-F2 (800-0136-01) handles 2-degree nodes, while the WSS-F4 (800-0139-01) covers 4-degree sites. For this reason, the WSS-F8 is the best fit for core aggregation sites and complex mesh networks, as well as spares for deployed Z-Series fleets.
